State League Report by – Glenn Meredith
Malvern Vs Surrey Park.
Result – Loss 17 – 4
After 2 weeks off we ventured to 2nd placed Surrey Parks ground minus Mike Kenlay and Jay Baskaran, but still hopeful of a competitive effort.
The first quarter we stuck to our defensive patterns well and the 3 to 2 (down) quarter time score was reward for a conscious and hard fought effort by the team, Squeaker seemed to have the centre covered, contested ground balls were up and the defensive talk was outstanding, we were well on track.
From that point we faded back into bad habits, lost control of team structures and as contested ground balls were hard to find we played 80% of the time in defence which against Surrey Park that is very difficult to defend against.
It’s hard to be to critical of our teams efforts but as the Surrey Park defence pushed the ball carrier in our attack, every time we went forward we needed people to stand up and take control which is always going to be difficult task with such a young forward line.
They threw the last 4 goals in 2 minutes to blow the score to 17 to 4, a scoreline we didn’t deserve, but again it’s a sign of how far and how close we are to the top teams.
“Once again” we have a week off this week, it’s been unbelievably difficult to keep my own mind focused on the job and can only wonder what effect this has had on the guys having 3 weeks off out of 4.
I question how the people in charge of Lacrosse in Victoria can seem so indifferent to this years fixture problems.
Division 1 Report by – Brendon Farrell
Malvern Vs Williamstown.
Result – Loss 24 – 7
This was our last game at home for the season against the top team in the league, as the score indicates it was a hard game but we played bette than what the score shows.
Willy got out to a great start with a 7-1 in the first and 5-1 in the second quarter, after the half time break we came out and won the quarter 4-3, going into the last our older legs gave out to the quick young Willy middies losing the last quarter 9-1
Brad Currie had an outstanding game and Paul Cook drew alot of the defenses attention.
This week we have senond placed Eltham away with will not doubt be a hard game.
Scorers Brad Currie 3, Paul Cook 2, Rod Finnigian 1 and Tim Laidlaw 1
Under 18′s Report by – Josh Naughton
Malvern Vs Footscray.
Result – Loss 7 – 11
The U18s put in a much improved performance at MCC against the competition’s form team Footscray.
In a tight match, Footscray built a lead over the first three quarters and the SEC boys left their run too late to be able to chase them down, eventually falling 7-11.
Aided by U16s Toby Exton, Luca Lettieri and James Butler and through the return from a shoulder injury of MCC’s Sam Maher, we matched Footscray all over the field except in our finishing which far too often was straight to the goalie or off target.
Again strong for us were Anthony Jenkinson, Jimmy Anglicas, Callum Gerrard and Sam Johnson who were ably supported by the U16 boys. Also William Leong in goals who is still improving in his first season and Jesse Coleman who has taken his game to another level this year.
Just clinging onto the all-important 4th finals position, we must win the next two away games to finish the season strongly against Eltham and Chadstone

Malvern Vs Eltham.
Result – Loss 17 – 10
We opened up with lots of possession of the ball but unfortunately we must have left our “good” shooting at home.
With a couple of players missing we were forced to make some last minute adjustments to our previous game plan.
Chris P , Nick K and Elliot were given specific tagging roles and came up with the goods overwhelmingly.
Joey once again stepped up and ran middy for nearly the whole game.
Guy played D the whole game and was very solid. Rupert also started in D and provided us with great clearing run up the sides all day.
Darcy who was ruled out sick had no choice but to stand in goals and did a strong job.
Alex and Paul worked the bottom left in attack racking up many ground balls and keeping the ball moving around the back of the goal to Jordy who did not let us down. Great game Jorda you showed some amazing “field sense” for a kid!
Paul got some high pressure ground balls and really stood up. Great job Pauly.
Chappy was his usual self running all over the field and creating havoc for the opposition. (he always does this with a smile!)
Urged to BUMP all day, the team did this and in the end it just wore Eltham out, proving Bumping is the go boys.
All in all a great TEAM effort. We were tested and felt plenty of pressure early but because we listened and talked we came out with the 4 Points and a certain finals spot.
Interesting Comments after the game came from the Eltham Umpire who said “Gus I have not heard a team of such a young age group talk so well on the field. They would be scary if they could talk like that for the whole game”.
Now boys, get the message TALK!! (Everyone)
Risers this week.
Joey led the team and ran all day, great work Joey and Guy for being awesome in defence all day.
Tips This Week
1. Talk Louder on the Field. (not to your mum)
2. Bump Harder on the Field. (not your little brother or Sister)

Result – Won 2 – 14
This week Malvern Reds travelled out to Eltham, to play Eltham Web.
The day was wet and cold, but the players came to play, and play they did. Everyone put in 110% effort and we came away with a victory 14-2.
Malvern playing outstandingly well and it is easy to see the improvement from the start of the year.
Allie and Tom were our main goal scorers with Mackenzie getting her first goal.
Overall it was a good day for Malvern Red!
