State League Report by – Glenn Meredith

Malvern Vs Footscray.

Result – Loss 13 – 6

State League played second placed Footscray at home on Saturday and we set about trying to disrupt their strong attack division which included 3 quality Americans. Using 3 different defensive patterns we held them scoreless for the first 12 minutes of the game.

The second quarter was more of the same and l thought at half time the 7 to 3 score line flattered them as we had had more shots and should have been a lot closer only for some minor skill errors on our behalf between the lines and shooting on goal the biggest areas of concern.

The second half our defence was strong again and only for a couple of minor communication breakdowns between players on the field let Footscray in for 2 or 3 goals they maybe shouldn’t have got.

Jay Baskaran was having a great day in the cage and with Matt Arthur leading from the front in D we just needed to find a way to put some score board pressure on them at the other end to get in the game.

The final score of 13 to 6 is again a sign of how far away and at the same time how close we are to the top teams, a contested ground ball here and there and a couple less skill errors in attack and we can mix it with anyone.

l am really looking forward to Caulfield this week at home and if we use the “same discipline” and just add some very minor adjustments in attack we will be competitive to say the least.

Division 1 Report by – Brendon Farrell

Malvern Vs Altona.

Result – Won 14 – 12

Division One had their first win in several weeks against Altona.

Starting the game with ten players and then growing to twelve before losing Joe Foster with a groin injury.  The game was hard fought and no team lead by more than a couple of goals at a time.

It was not until the last three minutes of the game that we got two goals ahead to finish winning 14-12.

Goals scores for the game were Shannon Bell 5, Paul Cook 4, Rod Finnigan 3 and Mez Clough 2

Under 18′s Report by – Josh Naughton

Malvern Vs Eltham

Result – Loss 9 – 10

The combined Malvern/MCC team lost narrowly 9-10 to Eltham at the Town Hall.  Despite missing many key players as has been the case for the last few weeks, the boys put up a very good fight with Jesse Coleman again equalling his career high of 3 goals, Sam Johnson also getting 3, Callum Gerrard scoring 2 and MCC’s Charlie Timlock notching 1.  Narrowly behind the whole game we could never quite draw level in a tight last quarter.

Next up is Chadstone at MCC.
