Coaches Report State League – Glenn Meredith
Malvern Vs Eltham.
Result – Loss 17 – 19
The State League team ventured to Eltham looking for an upset win and got a lacrosse lesson from a well organised team that trains together 3 times a week.
We started ok contesting well and once we got our pattern right in defence we were in the game at half time. However, losing attack short sticks James Garrett and Callum Gerard early in the third left us with no short stick rotations on the bench and swapping tired middies to the forward line as our only option in attack left us with little hope of a winning score against an experienced defence.
Defensively, Goalkeeper Jay Baskaran had the best game I’ve seen from him at our club and was clearly best player on the ground, he must have a go at the 2014 Senior Australian Team. I believe he is already the second best Goalkeeper in the country with only Chris Tillotson in front of him in ball stopping ability at this point.
Our long poles do a mountain of work in defence but our continuing ability to turn the ball over between the lines keeps them under pressure with broken fast breaks and 5 on 4 situations with which good teams will and do make you pay.
It was disappointing to send out clear instructions to always go to short sticks when clearing the ball only to be ignored, so either our shorties aren’t working hard enough, the defensive poles are ignoring my instructions or just plain skill errors, l would suggest it’s a bit of all, and it’s an area of huge concern for us.
It is impossible to get through all the important facets of our great game in 1 and a half hours on a Thursday night, we can touch on it all but improve on none. It has been easy to identify the 6 or so that turn up to both training nights as they are the ones that have improved the most this year and don’t seem to struggle with their fitness during games as much.
Having said all that, Camberwell this week, use your g.p.s units to find out where “The Town Hall” is and we will win this game, even just one win will change everything.
Coaches Report Division One – Brendon Farrell
Malvern Vs Melbourne Uni.
Result – Loss 15 – 16
Division One faced Melbourne Uni at home will just enough numbers to field a team, for the entire game we had only 10 players, but even so had a terrific game.
The game was even most of the game with only one to two goals separating the two teams all game, the first quarter was 4-4, the half time break had us down by one goal 8-7.
In the third quarter we let it slip out another two goals before making a great come back in the final quarter to get in front with only two minutes to go, with an unfortunate penalty, this allows Melbourne Uni to make the scores even and with 19sec left on the clock they scored their final goal and the game.
It was the best the ball has moved all year in attack and the defence played well all game it was the lack of legs that finally put the nail in the coffin for us.
Hopefully in the coming week we will get more player back to help booster the numbers
Coaches Report U’18 – Josh Naughton
Malvern Vs Williamstown.
Result – Won 16 – 8
The under 18s combined Malvern/MCC team faced up to top-of-the-ladder Williamstown for the 3rd time this year at the Albert Ground on yet another nice sunny morning. Our boys got off to a fantastic start leading 6-2 early in the second quarter before taking just a one goal advantage into the main break. Down just 2 at the last change, again we were left ruing a poor last quarter against the Seagulls after they scored 7-1 in the final term to score a comfortable 16-8 win. Among the best for Malvern were Jimmy Anglicas who garnered 3 votes from the refs for an outstanding display in defence, Billy Exton who scored 2 and was good in the faceoffs all day, Will Leong our goalie who (in his first year playing) made several great saves to keep us in the game and Callum Gerrard who despite a sore hand had 3 goals to again lead the team in scoring. Dom Barker, Sam Johnson and Anthony Jenkinson all had one goal each.
Up next week are bottom of the table Melbourne High School (an away game).
Coaches Report U’16 – David Joy
Malvern Vs Eltham.
Result – Win 21 – 3
First game back after the break and we were ready to play. Having 11 players at the start got the momentum going. Again we dominated the face off area and got some rhythm in attack early scoring 5 goals to Eltham 1.
In the 2nd quarter we were producing some very good team play all over the ground and went in leading 12-2 at the half.
Corey Hubbard took the leadership role in defence with James Butler not feeling 100%.
In the 2nd half we continued to nail Eltham to the floor. Most pleasing was the good form of Michael Deighton-Smith, Lewis Grieves, Zac Boulter and a more dangerous looking midi in Hamish Johnson. The most rewarding of all was Sammy Anglicas who finished with 4 goals and 2 assists playing bottom left on the attack line.
Goals scored Toby Exton 6-3, Dillan Hubbard 3-4, Sammy Anglicas 4-2, Luca Litteri 4-0, Michael Petreich 2-0, Zac Boulter 2-0, Hamish Johnson 0-1.
Next week we are home to Footscray who knocked off 2nd placed Williamstown last week
Coaches Report U’14 – Gus Campbell
Malvern Vs Northcote.
Result – Won 24 – 4
A great team performance and as I said, it did not matter what the scoreboard showed, it was how we got goals that was GOOD.
Maybe I should yell at training more often! When we move the ball we get good easy goals.
The attack was moving much better and we got some great goals from cuts which was very pleasing.
We must keep cutting towards the ball as it opens up so many options.
Once again we missed a number of ground balls and our shooting was a bit astray.
Whilst I know the Northcote goalie is quite good, we also helped him out.
Defence was very good again and although we did not get much of a workout we will spend some extra time at practice on the D.
It was great to Toby back on Track.
Rising Star Awards this week. 1st Riser to Paul L – Pauly hussled well and picked up a lot of groundballs and was also good at moving the ball on quickly.
2nd Riser goes to Toby – Toby came back strong after a break and ran up and down the field gathering numerous possessions.
Well Done Paul and Toby.
Good Tough Malvern Lacrosse Each and Every Day.

Malvern Vs Footscray Green.
Result – Loss 16 – 22
After a long weekend break and a redrawn fixture this week’s game was against Footscray Green. Goal scorers were – Ben 5-1, Tom B 3-1, Kaleb 3-1, Aaron 2-6, Tom Mac 2-3 and Loc 1-4
