Coaches Report State League – Glenn Meredith
Malvern Vs Altona.
Result – Loss 17 – 19
State league ventured to Altona and after a terrific training session on Thursday night, l thought how far Malvern however, to see us take the field as flat as a pancakes with zero contested ground balls and talk in defence nonexistent was very disappointing. The defensive patterns we had practised so well on Thursday night were gone and we had little forward structure.
At half time we were down by a couple but considering the poor first half, the game was still there to be won. Unfortunately our third quarter was more of the same, 5 goals down 10 minutes in to the third and it seemed as if we as a group were just passing time.
The next 20 minutes of lacrosse was the best we had played all season, out of nowhere came desire, want, effort, intent and pride.
Half way through the last we hit the front by 2, went man up and in a game changing moment Gaz hit the post. Altona scored on the rebounding fast break and threw the next 5 – “the rest as they say is history”.
l know our team has been beaten for the last 8 weeks, but in every game we show what we are capable of (our best is very good!). Unfortunately this is only ever in short bursts and we are unable to sustain the effort required to get over the line for 4 quarters.
I know the players have the ability, but after 8 loses in a row it’s time to ask the Coach some hard questions!
Coaches Report Division 1 – Brendon Farrell
Malvern Vs Eltham.
Result – Lost 4 – 21
Division One played what appeared to be a full strength Eltham team at the Town Hall on what became a very wet Saturday afternoon.
Eltham is defiantly a contender for winning the grand final this year and we knew we were in for a hard game, we controlled the ball fairly well out of the centre but had a hard time penetrating Eltham’s defence.
At the other end of the field the defence struggles again a well trained attack line with lots of picks and cuts, our main problem was not staying with our man and not talking letting the other defence players know when someone was cutting, I don’t know how many goals were thrown from crease area but it would have been the majority of them, this put Brad Skeeper under great pressure and frustration.
At the end of the third quarter it was obvious that the game was out of reach for Malvern and due to the pouring rain we swapped ends without a break, in the end Eltham won 21-4
Malvern Coaches Report U’18 – Josh Naughton
Malvern Vs Chadstone.
Result – Won 15 – 9
The Malvern/MCC combined team had a strong win over Chadstone, 15-9. Our boys were in control all day shooting out to an 11-4 lead at three quarter time before coasting to the finish line. Callum Gerrard was the star of the day with 6 goals and 3 assists while Billy Exton supported well on the scoreboard with 5 goals 3 assists. Again the match was won in the centre with Billy and Anthony Jenkinson dominating the faceoff and by winning the vast majority gave us the all-important first use of the ball. MCC’s Sam Maher had 2 goals and is turning out to be a very handy contributor through the midifield. MCC’s Alex Davies scored his first goal of the year and ‘Big’ Sam Johnson also scored one. Jimmy Anglicas was a star in the back half stripping the opposition many times and scooping up many loose balls.
After the Queens Birthday break we play Williamstown for the third time this year, the game will be played at MCC.
Coaches Report U’16 – David Joy
Malvern Vs Williamstown.
Result – Won 18 – 7
Again a slow physical and mental start put us level at 2 goals each at quarter time. In the second quarter our skill level improved and we out scored Williamstown 5-3. All three of our face off players Toby, Luca and Dillian began dominating the middle and also scoring some team lifting goals. We looked like a top team.
We have plenty to work on with our sleepy mental approach. We need to understand we need to want to dominate the game each time we play and we must be smarter, not giving away lazy flashy fouls when we are in control of the game.
Best on ground was Toby Exton who finished with 9 goals, 1 assist splitting the game up the middle in the third quarter. Toby was well supported by Luca Letteri 4 goals, 2 assists with Dillan Hubbard 2 & 1.
Sammy Anglicas played a vital role on the forward line as our leftie giving us good balance and ball rotation picking up 2 assists. Hamish Johnson scored 2 goals and ran all day off our wings working both ends of the field. Michael Petrisich picked up a goal whilst James butler set up a good assist running the full length of the field.
Overall 7 team assists out of 18 goals is ok, but we will need to join the dots and push up our work rate in the second half of the season.
Coaches Report U’14 – Gus Campbell
Malvern Vs Footscray.
Result – Loss 11 – 7
It was a great team effort on Saturday although we went down 11-7 to Footscray who are undefeated.
Once again it was good to play against a strong team to show us what we are up against. Our ground balls improved from last week however, we still need to keep improving in this area.
We had some great passages of play and led the game for the first half.
In the second half we had NO luck at all and once again we saw the importance of Shooting Accurately. I also stressed the
Importance of TEAM talk before the game and as we saw a couple of our guys got checked from behind as we did not
Talk loud enough to let them to know they were “hot”.
The main positive to come out of the game was the fact we are not very far off the top side.
We will improve a lot over the next few weeks and if we train harder than the other teams in the comp we will continue to strengthen.
Rising Star award 1 this week goes to Darcy. Darcy is always putting his body on the line for the team (resulting in a shoulder injury).
Great Effort Darcy we missed you when you went off.
Rising Star award 2 goes to Joey who has been running midfield every week for nearly the whole game and showing great leadership.
Well done Joey.
Good Tough Malvern Lacrosse Each and Every Day.
Cheers Gus.
Coaches Report U’12 Black – Steve Bown
Malvern Vs Eltham.
Result – Won 18 – 7
Malvern had a great win this week against Eltham. Another awesome team effort enabled us to score regularly throughout the game. It is fantastic to see everyone enjoying playing lacrosse. Our Thursday night ground ball training is working well and was highlighted by a dominant show of skill from Tom M, butt bumping Eltham players out of the way to allow him to pick up the ball. Aaron had another day out in front of the cage with 9 goals and 2 assists. Ben had 4-2, Tom B 2-5, Lachlan 2-3 and Paige 1 goal. Our super star goalie Will made an awesome save with his head and was only interested in more. Great effort everyone enjoy your week off.

Coaches Report U’12 Red – Zac Ansell
Malvern Vs Chadstone.
Result – Loss 3 – 19
Last week the Under 12 reds played Chadstone Lacrosse club. Whilst again playing short having only 7 players, Malvern still came out to play. The team worked hard for the ball, played excellent defence and worked well in attack. Throughout the game the entire team ran there hearts out, going in as hard as they could. Whilst the scores didn’t reflect it, the game looked close to onlookers. Kudos to Dylan as our superstar goalie!
