Malvern Vs Surrey Park.

Result – Loss 4 – 12

Big day at the Town Hall last Saturday against Surrey Park for the Ron Alaimo Cup and a great crowd turned up to see the State League team on display against last years runners up. We had them a little confused early with 5 zone and one locked off then into a 6 zone mostly for the rest of the afternoon that worked well till half time with the score 3 all, a credit to the defence and contested ground ball stats said we were the better team till then.

Second half a slightly different story and with all due respect to our substitute goalie for the day (Sticky) they started to work harder off the ball and their shot ratio and quality of shot lifted and we were unable to hold them out for the 3rd quarter.

Contested ground balls fell away to almost nil and we didn’t value the ball enough in attack.

We haven’t had the same 14 in the team at any stage this year and its a great credit to the starting 10 that we are being competitive,  we have a bye this week to regroup and start building to the Altona game who have never defeated Malvern in State Leagues history.

Malvern Vs M.C.C.

Result – Won 13-11

The Under18s Malvern/MCC team had an important game against Footscray at the Town Hall on yet another lovely sunny Saturday morning.  After a tough hard fought game, the boys pulled through with a 13-11 win sending them into the all important top four on the ladder.  Anthony Jenkinson and William (Billy) Exton starred again with both scoring 4 goals on the day and dominating in the faceoffs giving us first use of the ball over 75% of the time. Sam Johnson had a hat trick while MCC’s Sam Maher and Charlie Timlock both ended with one.  Jimmy Anglicas again did a great job in defence with many takeaways, knock downs and some great displays of leadership down back.  Next up is a trip to play an in-form Eltham.

This week will be a home game against Chadstone then the following week a clash between the only 2 undefeated teams us and Williamstown at Williamston.

Malvern Vs M.C.C.

Result – Won 21 – 7

It was a good win and puts the team second on the Ladder just behind Footscray on percentage.   One of the most important skills the team need to continue to work on is How we play our Defence.    We showed again on Saturday that if we Bump before we Check it works MUCH Better.

Remember – “Eyes on the Numbers”

We also need to remember when we are Chasing Opposition down the field to WAIT until they throw the ball then UPCHECK. All of you can Catch anyone.

We did well by “Shortening the Pass” but I still had to Yell out to some to “CARRY the Ball”.

Our goal shooting was Very Good later in the game but we did make their goalie look good early.

Remember to shoot off the Deck when out wide and Straight Over the Goalie’s Shoulder in close.

Talk was Good again. We can still be Louder for next week’s Game.

Rising Star Award was very hard this week so I gave two. Firstly Nick Maher who has been “On Fire” all season in Defence. Nick was sent to Attack and let 2 Shots go like “rockets” that hit the pipe and calmly said, ”Gus I don’t like Attack, put me back on D” My other award goes to Hugo Norris who was back after School Sport Exile. Hugo had a new face off stick and he showed us all how to use it dominating all over the Ground. Well done Hugo and Nick.

Next week the team plays Footscray at home for top spot on the ladder.

Malvern Vs M.C.C. Blue

Result – Won 14 – 2

This week the mighty U/12 Black hosted MCC Blue.  Another great performance saw us win 14 – 2.  Ground ball training on Thursday paid off with Will dominating every time the ball hit the deck.  The goals were shared around again this week, Aaron, Nathan and Ben shot 3 each, Lachlan and Tom B shot 2 with Tom M shooting 1.  Paige had plenty of opportunities but couldn’t find the back of the net.
