State League: vs Eltham 9-17

State League played Eltham this week at home and was always going to be a test for our young group to over come the Premiers for 4 of the last 5 years.
We started well enough and at quarter time we were well in it, as the game wore on though their strength and bigger bodies began to tell especially on hard ground balls out of the centre and finishing in goal. Our short sticks didn’t work hard enough off the ball in attack and apart from James Garrett and Josh Naughton who’s run and create was good all day we had to many passengers on the day.
Speaking to the Eltham players after the game they did say ”that was the best Eltham had played all year” and the 17 to 9 score line flattered them a bit and also thought we were on the up with some exciting kids.
With the Williamstown and Eltham home and away games now done we have seen the standard we need to be to win finals, but that “little” distance between us and them is a lot of hard work, Camberwell this week and another chance to cement our spot in the top 4, our destiny is still in our own hands.

Division 1: vs Williamstown 29-5

This week we had 15 Malvern players for the game against Williamstown who had a full side of 16.
Dave Gerard got a chance to play this week as Jeff Campbell was umpiring for Malvern.
Robbie Chamberlain & Adam Barnes were also back this week strengthening our attacking line up.
We didn’t have the benefit of a coach on the sidelines this week. That means we have no one watching the game closely & working out the best strategies to use against key opposition players. Brad can only do so much from down in the defenders end of the field.

Williamstown have a strong division one team and a number have played State leaugue through the season
This was another tough day for Malvern with our defenders seemingly powerless to stop the attacking plays from Williamstown.
Full credit to Brad Skepper who fended off a substantial number of tries and also to the rest of the defence team who tried hard all day to fend off the Willy attacks.

Our middies & attackers worked hard too but we had trouble keeping posession once we got the ball. Willy defenders were aggressivly checking and managed to turn over the ball throughout the day.
Robbie Chamberlain only played two quarters before a shoulder injury sidelined him from the game.
Mez Clough continues to impress with some strong runs down the field & 3 goals for the game.
Some of his acrobatic dives remind me of baseball base steals.
Dave Gerard put in some impressive work for an old feller and Fazza remains a stalwart in defence successfully fending off a number of attacks.

There were a higher than usual number of penalties partly due to the aggressive game played by Williamstown & also due to frustration over the ever widening score.

Next week we play Chadstone at home.

Quarter by quarter
Q1 Malvern 2 Willy 6
Q1 Malvern 3 Willy 13
Q1 Malvern 3 Willy 22
Q1 Malvern 5 Willy 29

Goal Scorers
Mez Clough 3
Jake Coleman 1
Adam Barnes 1

Best on ground for Malvern
3 pts Brad Skepper
2 pts Mez Clough
1 pt Adam Barnes

Division 3: vs Chadstone 16-8

Under 18′s: vs Footscray 17-18

Under 16′s: vs Footscray 7-16

Under 14′s: vs Chadstone 34-2

This week we played bottom team Chadstone with a full list we managed a 20 -0 half time score. Sending the bigger ones off to the Under 16s at half time gave our younger group full game time. In the second half we tallied up 14 goals conceding just 2 goals. Overall a good solid performance from all of the players. Our three top points scorers so far this season are Dylan 52g,39a -Michael 51g,21a-Sammy 43g,26a ,with very high support from all other team members. This weeks game again shows 18 assists a very important coaching direction that shows sharing the ball developing team work. We have a bye this week then face second placed Surrey Park away.

Under 12 Blacks: vs Camberwell Sting 4-12

Under 12 Reds: vs Chadstone Red 9-13
