State League: vs MCC 14-23
Division 1: vs MCC 14-6
13 players fronted for the final home & away game for the season against MCC.
MCC could only field 11 players giving them limited chances to rest key players.
Mez Clough was back after a couple of weeks off due to injury & Dave Gerard had a run leaving Mick Bown to handle umpiring duties.
Rod Finnigan also joined the team for this game and Jessie Coleman got a chance to play with big brother Jake.
At our last match up Malvern went down 8 – 14 to MCC.
Malvern made a good start in the first quarter with 4 players shooting individual goals whilst holding MCC to one.
Malvern continued to out play MCC in the second quarter shooting another 4 goals & only letting one through to MCC.
The third quarter was a bit more even with three Malvern goals & two more to MCC. A highlight of this quarter was a goal to Callum Gerard with an assist from his dad!
MCC continued to fight hard in the final quarter but could only manage 2 goals against Malvern’s 3.
Final score was a good win to Malvern 14 against MCC 6.
Adam Barnes was our top scorer with 4 goals but Rod Finnigan & Jake Coleman also shone with 3 goals each.
Strong defence kept MCC goals to a minimum with Brendon Farrell putting in some good blocking moves which led to one MCC player blowing off some steam in the penalty box.
Nick Shearman made a number of good clears one of which ultimately led to a Malvern goal.
There were a higher than normal number of penalties but pretty even on both sides highlighting a hard fought game.
The umpires did a good job especially late in the last quarter when a couple of incidents could have led to more penalties if not for a firm handed approach to settle everyone down.
This win saw Malvern reclaim 5th place on the ladder from MCC below 4 teams that could easily play and win in State league.
Over the season 32 different players had a run in Division one for Malvern including players from State League & Div 3 as well as younger players from under 18 & under 16.
Our top goal scorer was Adam Barnes with 26 goals from just 9 games
Second was Jake Coleman who shot 22 goals from 17 games.
In all a good first season after elevation from Division 2 last year.
I’m sure next year that the team will become more cohesive and as long as we can get a full bench each week I think our performances can only improve.
