State League: vs Camberwell 9-17

State League ventured to Camberwell with a hint of finals in the air and came home well and truly defeated by a team much more experienced and organised than us on the day.

Sometimes during the season, us as Coach’s and supporters have to realise that a lot of our kids are just that, and while the future should be bright “with a lot of hard work” we will have lots of ups and downs that always come with such a young side.

I do believe we are on the right track with our young team and the 7 wins already this year and talk of finals is a big step up from last year.

As a first year Coach, this year has been a huge learning curve for me personally and l will take the blame when it goes wrong as it did last Saturday.  We all must learn to play and respect each other to be successful and this is the Coach’s responsibility to reinforce this.

Contested ground balls and passing under pressure are our biggest weakness at this point and while its easy to say just go out and stick your head over it, when your turn comes a lot of the time we are boys playing men and we need to remember that in the short term.

Ron Aliamo cup against Surry Park this week and another chance for us to pit ourselves against a top 2 side. Will be great to see all the past players and a chance for us to shake up a top team.

Division 1: vs Chadstone 3-18

The top 4 teams in Division 1 this year (Williamstown, Chadstone, Surrey Park & Eltham) are in a leauge of their own.
Fourth place Eltham is on 235 points whilst Malvern, best of the rest in 5th place, is on 62 points.

Four of the last five games have seen Malvern defeated at the hands of one of the top four teams.
This week we again started at a dissadvantage with only 12 players against Chadstone’s full bench.

Dave Gerard was required to umpire & Robbie Chamberlain was out after last weeks shoulder injury against Williamstown.
Brad & the defence team again had their work cut out trying to block Chadstone’s attacks.
Adam Barnes covered plenty of ground all day and worked hard at both ends of the field. This was duely noted by the umpires.
Cam Scott also played hard all day and encouraged the rest of the team to keep fighting.
Zac Ansell always puts in a big effort and was ever eager to get back into the game.
Early in the first quarter we lost Mez & Jake for a short period due to minor injuries but managed to hold Chaddy to 5 goals gaining 1 for Malvern.

The second quarter saw Chaddy lift their game and Malvern failed to score whilst Chaddy added another 6 goals to their tally.
By quarter 3 you would expect Malvern to be slowing down with only 2 on the bench but this was our best quarter.  We managed another goal and only let Chaddy get 3 past the keeper.

The final quarter was again a good one for Malvern with our third goal and Chaddy only managing 4 for the quarter.
Once again Malvern players received quite a few penalty calls some no doubt due to frustration in trying to block Chadstone attackers and trying to improve Malvern’s score.

Next week we play Altona away for the penultimate home & away game.
We defeated them 14 to 9 last time around so should have a good chance for a win next Saturday.

Quarter by quarter
Q1 Malvern 1 Chaddy 5
Q2 Malvern 1 Chaddy 11
Q3 Malvern 2 Chaddy 14
Q4 Malvern 3 Chaddy 18

Goal Scorers
Mez Clough – 1
Jake Coleman – 1
Callum Gerard – 1

Best on ground for Malvern
3 pts  Adam Barnes
2 pts  Mez Clough
1 pt  Brendon Farrell

Division 3: vs Chadstone 17-5

Under 18′s: vs Chadstone

Under 16′s: vs Chadstone 17-2

Under 14′s: BYE

Under 12 Blacks: vs Chadstone Red 7-19

Both U12 teams ventured to Chadstone this week and with no U14′s we had all available U12′s on board.  Taylah and Dylan were a welcome addition to the Blacks.  With Lachlan taking a bullet in the shoulder early in the game Dylan volunteered to pull on the goalie gear for the first half.  This had Chadstone on the back foot early with Dylan making some awesome saves. With great passing and team work our goal scorers this week were Chaps 3, Kaleb 2, Tom 1 and first gamer Chris 1.  Our usual ground ball kings of Aaron , Rohan and Nathan continued to run rings around the opposition when the ball hit the deck.  Maddie showed some impressive speed when she gets her long legs moving.  Now, with the difficulty of keeping Paige off the field the challenge is to find a good match up. We found a Chadstone player with the same build and set Paige the task of running with her.  With one week to go we will be working hard to help Jenna secure her elusive first goal.  It will be great to get a crowd on Saturday morning at the town Hall as both Malvern teams take the field for the last time in 09.

Under 12 Reds: vs Chadstone Gold 12-10
