State League: vs Moreland 24-5
State League ventured out to Moreland last Saturday and four things happened l have never seen before and hopefully never see again, 1/ The Woman in my navman goes to pieces in West Brunswick. 2/ I had to drive under a bridge and up a creek bed to get to a game of Lacrosse. 3/ I saw a long pole assist another long pole for a goal. 4/ With 10 seconds to go in the game l yelled out to a Short stick forward to shoot it and they passed it. 3 of them l can deal with but when a long pole (Matt Arthur) draws the double and hits another long pole (Dale Croal) and he scores, l went home and had several stiff Scotch’s and a little lie down.
The game itself never really hit any great heights with Squeaker, Pat and Larry all dominating the middle and our poles running riot over an opponent that’s probably not up to State League at this moment, but you can only play who they put in front of you and the 24 to 5 scoreline was still a credit to our guys, 7 goals (4 of them left handed) to Josh Naughton, and 5 goals 3 assists to Mike Kenlay shows our attack is gaining momentum. We are still on target for the finals as long as we structure up and play disciplined Lacrosse, the next few weeks are critical to our efforts and we cannot afford a slip up. This weeks game against Altona at home is as important as any and as percentage may come into play for us and we need to keep building.
Division 1: vs Camberwell 23-5
The score should say it all! This week we had a full bench for once and a great effort was put in by all player.
We dominated the centre and got use of the ball mainly through Billy Exton (3 goals, 1 assists) and Mez Clough (2 goals, 1 assists), and good drive and direction through the attack by Rob Chamberlain (7 goals, 3 assists), Adam Barnes (4 goals, 1 assists), Ryan Scanlan (3 goals), Dave Gerrard (1 goals) and Jake Coleman (3 goals).
The defence played solid as usual not allowing Camberwell many scoring opportunities.
Division 3: vs Altona 17-6
With 6 players pulling out at the last minute, Malvern were up against it in the clash with Altona on Saturday. Even though we dominated early in the game, great defence from Altona saw them go to the first break with a 1 goal lead. The 2nd quarter saw the team find the target with 8 goals to put us back in control and from there we never looked back. Our new goalkeeper in Michael Bown had a great game frustrating the opposition whenever they managed to get through the defence of Zac Ansell, James Butler and Angus Norris. The midfield controlled the faceoffs all day with Rod Finnigan appearing to have the ball on a string with great support from Joey Forster and courage from Jessie Coleman. The forward line of Murray Keen, Tim Laidlaw and Brett Sexton had Altona constantly under pressure. At the end of the day it was a great team game with everyone contributing against the odds.
Goals:Rod Finnigan 6, Murray Keen 5, Tim Laidlaw 2, Brett Sexton 2, Joey Forster 2.
Assists: Rod Finnigan 3, Murray Keen 3, Tim Laidlaw 2.
Best Players: Rod Finnigan(BOG), Brett Sexton, Joey Forster.
Hamburger Award: Jessie Coleman.
Under 18′s: vs Surrey park 15-4
A close fought game against Camberwell at the Town Hall ended in a draw, with the visitors leveling the game with under 2 minutes to go. Throughout the game, Anthony ‘Ear hole’ Jenkinson dominated at the face off x, winning the ball quickly and setting up many fast break chances. Jesse ‘CJ’ Coleman shocked and pleased many in the crowd by scoring his first goal of the season in the second quarter and followed it up with 2 more to give him his hat trick. The rest of our offense did a good job of converting chances, with Rowan ‘Robocop’ Anglicas bagging 5, Billy ‘Rugby’ Exton 2 and singkles to AJ and Callum ‘Son of Westy’ Gerrard. Defense struggled in the first quarter to contain the opposition but improved as the game went on. special mention goes out to Sam ‘Left-handed’ Johnson who played his first game on the weekend.
Under 16′s: vs Melbourne High School Maroon 14-1
Under 14′s: vs Williamstown Feron 22-6
Having some injuries this week meant more game time for the players.
With another strong preformance in the face off by Dylan Hubbard enabled us first use of the ball all day.We got in some good defence practice today something we have been needing for some time.Overall a good preformance with some high goalscoring.Michael Petritsch 8-4,Dylan Hubbard 6-6, Joe Blakeney 5-1,Sammy Anglicas 2-2,Guy Exton 1-0.All of the other players did a sound job carring out their roles. This week we are away at Footscray looking to keep our unbeaten record in tact.
Under 12 Blacks: vs Camberwell Buzz 6-8
Ventured out to Camberwell again to yet another chilly encounter. Started the game with Camberwell 1 player down, thought that might have helped our situation but being a much stronger team it was not an asset for us. Camberwell got off to a good start. Malvern had shots at the goals, but accuracy was letting us down. Everyone was playing well though. Good teamwork all round. Ground balls swooped on but just conversion was a bit low. End of the day we went down to the better Camberwell side by only 2 goals to much of the teams credit they had the never give up attitude and is proof that the work at training is paying of on the field on Saturday. The Hungry Jacks and Cold Rock awards went to Lachie & Rohan for good team play.
Under 12 Reds: vs Camberwell Sting 15-2
