State League: vs Surrey Park 1-20
James Garrett wrote:
State League got beaten easily by Surrey Park on the weekend, losing 20-1.. After the first goal of the game got disallowed for Malvern, we were really never in it, scoring our only goal with less than 2 minutes remaining in the game thanks to Travis Croll’s dive and shot across the crease to make sure that we werent shut out.
The defence tried hard all day trying to limit the Surrey Park chances, but in the last quarter Surrey park pulled away scoring 7 goals to push the score beyond respectability. Midfield did a fair amount of running, but we couldn’t put the ball in the net all game.
Fitness and stick skills let the team down and will obviously have to improve if we are a chance to beat MCC this weekend.
Division 1: vs Altona 4-16

Div 1 played Altona at home with a 14 to 9 win.
There was some quick recruiting just before the game to add some numbers and fortunately Shannon Bell and Luca Lettieri came into the side. Shannon chipped in with 6 goals and Luca won the face offs giving us first use of the ball. Handy pick-ups. Mick Bown fell to a calf injury early in the game and so having the extra players was a bonus.
The defence line held strong all day making it difficult for Altona to score. Cam Scott, Angus Norris. Zac Ansell, Nick Shearman and Courtney Scanlan shared duties and provided a lot of run on the midfield as well. The run out of defence into attack put pressure on Altona and on one occasion Angus ran the length of the field to score. Of course they were let by Brad Skepper in goals who once again stopped more than went in.
Ollie Johnson provided some early aggression to motivate the team and continued it on through the game and scored a great goal to top off a good game. Callum Gerrard scored a hard earned goal with Altona getting even with him later in the game by sandwiching him between two defenders, ouch.
The old guys – Cuzza and Westy – couldn’t get a rest on the forward line and had to run off the midfield – even though they were a few yards/metres slower than Mez Clough. Mez provided many sizzling runs that left the Altona players in their tracks. Ryan Scanlan ran hard all day putting pressure on the Altona players and always came away with the ball.
Malvern were consistent throughout the game managing to always keep in front. A good all round team effort..

The 14’s hosted Willy City at the Town Hall this week and with Joey Blakeney unavailable and Darcy Campbell at school detention, Guy Exton was promoted from the rookie list. It did not take Guy very long to make his mark scoring a goal on his first time out. Guy ended the game with 3 goals.
Dillon Hubbard was again dominating the face off and with Sammy Anglikas and Hamish Johnston on either side, the midfield was fully controlled by Malvern. Jaxon Glover was back from a lay off and started in goals making some great saves.
Down in attack, the very slippery Jordan Campbell was again on song finishing with 5 goals and 4 assists. The belle of the team had come to play today and Ellen Campbell finished the game with 7 goals.
In defence, Corey Hubbard and Nick Chapman were very strong and Willy could not penetrate. Chappy was also showing some very “clean” work crossing from defence to attack and also scoring goals.
Michael Pietrich had done a bit of work on his stick after Thursday night and it had paid off with “Shorty” scoring a few and making some great feeds.
Overall, it was a great team effort and coach Curly was very happy with the teamwork and vision displayed. Curly also stated that he would like to see the whole team move the ball a bit quicker.
Interesting to note that every player scored!
Final score Malvern 36 Willy City 6
Under 12 Black: vs Camberwell Sting 15-10

Camberwell was the place and chilly were the conditions.
Our other Malvern team had played them and won so we thought this could be an even match.
1st Q: Camberwell got the jump with the first goal in short time and we thought “here we go”.
Malvern responded just as quick with some good movement to even the score up 1 all.
Kaleb did some hard work in chasing down the ball to get back into our forward line.
Then the goals came more consistently with Rohan also getting his first ever goal in Lax.
( Think he resembled the Cheshire cat from Alice in Wonderland ! )
Goal scorers: Aaron(2 ) Lachlan, Kaleb and Rohan all getting one a piece.
End of first Quarter scores were Malv 5 – Camb 2.
2nd Q: Scoring slowed a bit as the temperature dropped as well .
Another factor might have been that Squeak suggested “Lets see if we can get Jenna a goal?”
The poor girl was peppered with everything that came down to the forward line in an attempt to get her on the score sheet but to no luck. (It will come Jenna)
Only goal scorers for that quarter were Ben and Aaron with one a piece with Maddie Croll doing an amazing effort in goals to only let 2 goals past her that quarter.
Half time scores Malvern 7 – Camb 4.
3rd Q: Full of the traditional “snakes” the excited team (or frozen) took to the field again.
Maddie passed the goalie gear to her sister Jenna who appealed about the appointment but was quashed by Supreme Judges Dale and Julie. (she did look a bit like a “bobblehead” with the helmet on.)
The team continued their efforts with some great work from Nathan as he tackled ground balls against some bigger players and came up with the goods through persistence and grit.
Camberwell seeing “the pint sized warrior” was in and only taking up a quarter of the goal space decided to attack the goals. They managed to get 3 passed Jenna but she did make a beautiful save and “swatted” a shot away like a dirty blowfly.Ben Chapman and Thomas were the only scorers on our team with one each.
End of the 3rd Malv 9 – Camb 7
4th Q:Pressure was on as Camberwell had closed the gap and victory was in their sights.
The “Ferret Brigade”(Lachlan, Nathan, Ben and Rohan) were once again getting in the mix to get the ball down to the forward line to set up players for good team goals which came steadily from the get go.
Thomas “Air Jordan” Bown was having some luck in bagging 3 goals with his signature jump shot that would have put the
“Gait brothers” to shame. Maddie Croll missed out on few chances but with her presence will be an obvious “go to” player
in games to come. Aaron helped the cause with 2 goals from nice assists as did Kaleb hitting the back of the net to
put the result out of reach for Camberwell at the sound of the whistle.
Aaron and Thomas ended up with 5 and 4 respectively and Kaleb gave 5 assists for the day.
End Score Malv 15 – Camb 10. Good Team Work!!
Nathan received the grill’d voucher for a great effort!
Under 12 Reds: vs Caulfield
James Garrett wrote:
After a tight first quarter, the reds flexed their collective muscle and ended up 16-1 winners over Caulfield on a fresh saturday morning (Just ask Joe Maher)
A once again strong team effort was the highlight of the day with every single player contributing the scoresheet with at least a goal or a few assists.
The attack line lead by Zara and Taylah ensured that the midfielders were always given a strong option. Luke, Ally and Dylan provided some strong running, defence and ball carrying through the midfield yet again. Rupert and new defensive star Nick intercepted numerous balls and provided strong run out of defence. Once again the goalie tandem of Alex and Elliot made sure than when Caulfield did get a shot off, they were saved and thrown back into attack.
Stats
Zara 3 assists
Nick 4 assists
Dylan 1 goal
Ally 1 goal
Taylah 2 goals
Elliot 2 goals
Rupert 3 goals 3 assists
Luke 3 goals 3 assists
Alex 4 goals 1 assist.
