State League: vs Altona 17-11

For the 3rd time in 5 weeks Malvern once again headed west over the Bridge, this time to face off against the newly promoted to State League Altona Vikings.
This week there were a couple of additions to the team, Glenn “Rubber Man” Meredith along with Rod ” Rocket ‘ Ansell with a request to shake the cob webs off what looked like a pair of U.S.A. gloves from the 70’s and to oil up the old CROOKED ARROW

After Malvern successfully ran onto the field, Chris “Larry” Baker took control of the centre and the backline play solidly for the first quarter keeping Altona to 3 goals, Malvern had 4 for the Quarter
2nd Quarter started like the first with Malvern controlling the ball out of the middle and brought down to the offence end with goals coming pretty quickly and easy from our offence.  In the Quarter 3 after a maybe a couple too many pats on the back from the Malvern camp the boys came out a little flat after the half time break, scoring only 2 goals for the quarter

4th Quarter begun like the other 3 with Malvern taking control in the middle and our offence finding their form once again with nice patience and some good passing and shooting seal a victory over Altona 17 – 11

Thanks to Rocket and Glenn for stepping into the team and helping out both did a great job and was great to play with them in State League in the 09 season..

Division 1: vs Eltham 4-16

Division 1 had a few extra players this week with Division 3 been given a walkover by Melbourne Uni.   The extra players were needed as we were playing Eltham, one of the top teams.
We got away to a great start catching Eltham asleep with the first two goals, after this Eltham took it up a notch to coming back to lead 4-2 by the end of the first quarter

Defence played particularly well with Brad Skepper improving ever week in his new role as goalie and a strong display by Div 3 defenders Cam Scott and Jason Brewer.
After loosing the majority of the face-offs in the first half Rod Finnigan strapped on the boots to help out in the face-off winning most of the draws for the rest of the day, you maybe wondering why only in the second have?   Some may say he was scared to play Eltham others may say he had a bad back through brushing his teeth and shouldn’t have played, what ever the reason he was needed by the team.

In the end we went down to Eltham 16-4 but the game seemed to be closer than that.

Under 18′s: vs Chadstone 8-9

The boys of the U18 Black and Red played well on the weekend, while undermanned against a well stocked Chadstone team only to go down 9-8 after leading all day. Despite only having 9 players, we managed to gain an early an early jump on the opposition through the capitalisation of 2 goals. Due to no penalties being given our way we were also under pressure in both defense and offensive areas all day.

Although being extremely under the weather and on the verge of throwing up through his grill, Anthony (fast break) Jenkinson managed to tally up 4 goals and dish out an assist. Meanwhile Callum (son of ref) Gerrard added 2 sterling goals during the game while working tirelessly through the midfield and attack lines. Rowan (Robocop) Anglicas played another terrific game working in all fields of the game, and adding 2 goals and an assist.

The defence played a 5 zone all day keeping the Chaddy offense at bay until late in the game when our lack of numbers got the better of us. Without a doubt Jay Baskaran was best on the ground making countless saves at critical times, backed up by our 3 long poles Courtney (Courtney Scanlan) Scanlan, Jakey (about to make a big mistakey) Baxter and Joel (cant remeber how to spell his last name)….

Everyone put in 110% and played a great game and should be very proud of themselves.

Under 16′s: vs Altona 36-1

This week the U16′s had a home game against Altona, thankfully the U14 were also at home so there was no waiting for them to show up.  This week we had 5 boys come up to help us out giving us 12 to start the game. Finally a bench to rotate the boys through.  We thought that we were going to be in trouble with Altona showing up with 16 player, but our boys were up to the challenge.  With Toby and Dylan giving us first use of the ball all day out of the middle things were going our way from the start and the boys ran out the first quarter 6-1 and never looked back.

The match then went our way with a shut out for the rest of the day from the defense led by our goalie Tom.  In the third quarter James Butler wasn’t going to be out done by Jimmy Anglicas after he went coasts to coast to score and did it himself.  This gave Tom the same idea but he was taken down just past the center line giving us a man up.  The boys ran out winners with a score of 26-1.

Under 14′s: vs Footscray 31-7

Establishment Games – No report supplied

Under 12 Black: vs (Game 1) Altona 3-5       (Game 2) Footscray 4-8

U/12 Black made the trip over the bridge this week to Altona for the last of their establishment games. Aaron Currie was looking green as he got out of the car, and after losing his breakfast on the sidelines decided it would be best to sit the game out. We lined up against a fairly evenly matched team in Altona and started the game well with Thomas scoring early and great running from his brother Lachlan, second gamers Rohan and Maddy Croll were tough in defence and great with the ground balls!  Ben Chapman was strong in the goals, and Nathan, a champion interceptor, knocked down pass after pass from Altonas attack line. Kaleb Alaimo showed off his fantastic stick skills and scored late in the game, but the but in the end we went down 3-5.

The next game saw us take our positions against a bigger more experienced team in Footscray, little Lochie Bown donned the goalies gear and made some great saves, It was goal for goal with some fast play and even faster scoring from both teams, with Ben topping the scoring,  Nathan dislayed lightning speed and great chasing work at both ends. Our only girl this week Maddy did some fantastic work in the midfield and Dylan read the play well in defence. Thom made some great intercepts but with our catching letting us down we let Footscray get in front and struggled to pin them back for the rest of the game. The final result 4-8.

It was a great effort by everyone and what the scores didnt show was the fantastic teamwork and great attitudes shown by all the players who encourage their team mates and most of all enjoy their Lacrosse.

A big Thanks this week to David Chapman for umpiring his first game!

Under 12 Reds: vs (Game 1)             Chadstone (Game2)MCC

Last weeks game, which included some fixturing problems, forced us to join sides with Camberwell to play both Chadstone and MCC. Malvern played a great game and combined with Camberwell without difficulty. We played hard, and had a lot of fun! Malvern scored the significant portion of the goals, dominated in both intercepts and running the ball down field. Good job guys!

Kudos to Tahlia for getting player of the week!
