Malvern Lacrosse Club

Melbourne – Victoria – Australia

Saturday’s Junior Semi-Finals saw our U18′s triumph over Footscray, after losing to them twice during the home-and-away games as well as last year’s Grannie. U16′s and U14′s both went down in their 2nd Semi-Final games, so all three teams will be in action in the Preliminary Finals this Saturday morning at Surrey Park.

State League finishes their Season this Saturday with a big clash against Footscray. Div 2 and 3 are destined for their Finals campaigns, but they both play their main rivals in their sections in this week’s final round games.

Saturday Night is Open Mic and Karaoke Night at the Clubrooms to celebrate the end of the home-and-away season (as best we can, given the differing schedules for Juniors and Seniors), starting at 7pm.

Go Malvern!!!

Best regards,

Mike

Presentation Day and AGM:

As is our tradition, Presentations and AGM will be at the Club on the Sunday after Senior Grand Finals Day. At the AGM we’ll be calling for nominations for Committee positions, so please give consideration to whether you may be prepared to serve the Club on the Committee — it’s vital to the continued strength of our Club that we have good, willing people in all areas of Club life.

Mens Round 17: 16th August 2008

State League: Surrey Park 9-25

Malvern started well, going goal-for-goal with Surrey for 3 goals each, but then letting Surrey jump out by 3 goals in the last few minutes of the quarter. The second quarter was 8-0 Surrey as they moved the ball quickly and scored freely; a calf injury to Fazza didn’t make life any easier for the defence. Malvern scored a handful more goals in the second half, but Surrey had control of the game. Gazzer scored 2-2, Josh 1-2, Paddy and Rob 2-0, LJ and Trav 1-1.

This week’s game against Footscray is an opportunity to finish the Season on a winning note as we and they have identical win-loss records to this point, apart from their nail-biting one-goal win over us last time around. A win will give us a creditable 5th place finish on the ladder, thanks in part to our U12′s not missing any weeks bonus points for the whole Season.

Division 2: vs Eltham 20-1

Coach Dave Joy wrote:

Last Saturday’s game was expected to be a tuff, close battle but didn’t turn out that way. Steve Bown controlled all the face-offs, continuing to gather more association Best & Fairest votes. All the defence AJ/Zac/Tim and big Dale played solid pressured defence for 4 quarters. Jeffrey in goals mopped up the shots and sent great outlet passes down the field. Again our attack controlled the tempo, Paul Cook worked had for his 5 goals 7 assists, follwed by Tim Laidlaw who shot very well to finish with 6 goals. Rowan Anglicas moved and shot the ball well to finish with 4 goals. A very tight team effort from everyone. Final score 20-1.

This week we play Camberwell at the Caulfield Outer starting at 2.30pm; players need to be there from 1:00pm to set up the ground.

Division 3: vs Altona 35-3

Dave Gerrard wrote:

We started quickly out at Altona, scoring some quick goals to set the pattern for the day. Fortunately the opposition didn’t put up much resistance and we were able to move the ball into attack and score freely. With only 11 players there was quite a bit of rotation off the back line and forward line. Matt Arthur ran all day and Rubber shared the load on the midfield. Roy is finding some form; finding space up forward and scoring a few goals – must be all the mid week running. Our defence didn’t get much of a work out and it showed when the ball eventually got down there – Altona scored a few easy goals. Rod Finnigan is back in control in the centre and well supported on the wings by Jesse and Callum. Looking forward to next week when we play top of the table Williamstown at home for a change.

U18: 1st Semi-Final vs Footscray 8-6

U16: 2nd Semi-Final vs Surrey Park 8-17

U14: 2nd Semi-Final vs ChadCam 10-11

Coach Josh wrote:

At a cold and wet Royal Park, Malvern could not match the combined Chadstone/Camberwell team in the 2nd Semi-Final going down 11-10. The main damage was done in the second quarter which put Malvern down by 3 at both half and 3 quarter time. While the boys came back and got level late in the last quarter, the opposition scored quickly to seal it. Toby Exton again led the scoring with 4g 3a, and Sam Anglicas ended with 3g 1a. Special mention must be given to Max Dalgleish who stepped into the cage after our star goalie Ed Brennan broke his arm during the week. Max performed extremely well and was among Malvern’s best. Next week we play rival Altona for the 3rd time this year and hope to reverse previous form which has seen Altona win comfortably.
