Malvern Lacrosse Club

Melbourne – Victoria – Australia

Hi everyone, here is the newsletter for round 13. Sorry it is a little late! And we don’t have match reports for all games, but most are covered here.

Firstly, a word from our President…

A big thank you to all who attended the Junior Triva night; a good night was had by all especially the biggest kid of all, Travis Croll. Many thanks to Sandra, Joe and James for the work they put in and to Rod Ansell for manning the bar!

And a big welcome home to all our weary travelers coming back from overseas. I hear all the Malvern boys did the club proud. I have also been advised that some of our members will be heavily involved in the Senior State Championships in October – Murray Keen, Chris Baker, Brad Skepper coaching the State Side, with Rod Finnigan hoping to be Manager. The Championships will also have a Presidents team that will be managed by another Malvern identity,( too shy to have his/my name printed). I also hear that Murray Keen will be involved with the Australian girls team. Keep in mind all the Malvern people that have been involved with the under 16s and 19s men’s

state teams and the girls’ state team which was coached by Rod Ansell.

A list of people who have or will represent this club in national or international duties either as player, coach or manager this season: Keith Chamberlain, Brad Skepper, Dave Joy, Phil Garrett, Josh Naughton, Rob Chamberlain, James Garrett, Rod Ansell, Romey Ansell, Jay Baskaran, Rowan Anglicas, Anthony Jenkinson, Tom Benson, Billy Exton. Pat, McGrath-Campbell, Joe Forster, Mick Bown, Mike Naughton, Trevor Jenkinson Chris Baker Murray Keen, Rod Finnigan and Norm Coleman,

Remember also that Malvern, through Johnny Cantone and Neville Bell, has been a big asset in the development of the Bendigo League, and again, thanks to all who played up there the other weekend.

This just shows how interested Malvern members are in supporting the game, and how many opportunities Malvern people have to get involved at the elite level; it makes you proud to be a member doesn’t it?

Regards

Norm

Secondly,

Perhaps you can help with a survey for Mary Anglicas (mother of Daniel, Rowan, Jimmy and Sam)?

“I’m currently doing a research project on Work/Life balance and I need your help. I need volunteers to complete an online questionnaire about how you manage to work, keep the family and home running and all the other things we do, eg get kids to lacrosse each week. I need between 100 to 300 volunteers so any help you can give would be greatly appreciated.

If you want to complete the questionnaire (its all completely anonymous) go to the web site below and click away.

Thanks – Mary”

Photo of the week – Josh Naughton!

“Josh in action in the USA match at the U19 World Champs. Josh’s stats for the tournament were 11 goals and 17 assists in the 7 games, so he saw plenty of action in the green and the gold.”

And now to games…

State League

The best of the red and black headed over the bridge to Williamstown on Saturday, eager to surprise a strong Williamstown outfit that shocked us with a 30-3 drubbing last time we met in round 4. The boys were fired up and eager to show off our improvement since then, and it showed right from the opening whistle. Williamstown got on the board early with a fast break goal off the opening face-off, but Malvern answered only seconds later, and the tone of the game was set. Robbie Chamberlain shone offensively, flaunting his quickness and shooting prowess, scoring three goals in the first half and finishing the game with five and two assists, and Jeff Joy was stellar at times in the net. Unfortunately, Ryan Scanlan injured his ankle when it was inadvertently stepped on by a Williamstown midfielder in a loose ball battle late in the second quarter, and left the field, not to return for at least another week. Pat McGrath-Campbell continued the fine form he has been showing all year at the face-off X, but Malvern were outplayed on loose balls in the first half, causing us to enter the break down 12-7, but determined to fight harder in the second half. The game’s fast pace continued after the main break, but Williamstown’s athleticism and strong ball movement caused them to slowly pull away towards a final score of 22-13, a convincing win, but certainly a better result for Malvern than last time we met.

Overall, the game provided a strong showing by the red and black, as we begin to enter the “pointy end” of the season. Next week state league play Caulfield at home. Last time the teams met the game ended in an astonishing comeback and emotion-fraught double-overtime victory by the good guys (us), so the game should be another good one,

Billy Exton

Division 2

the team was given a walk-over from Moreland. The team is looking forward to some challenging games over the next few weeks where they play 4 of the top 6 sides.

Rod Ansell

Division 3

The game against Chadstone almost didn’t go ahead. Five minutes before the start both sides only had 8 players. Fortunately for us a few Div 2 players showed up after they found out they were given a walkover. Chadstone managed to find a couple of players and the game got started. Last time these teams met it was a cold day and the result was close. This time, it was a cold day but the result was not close, Malvern winning easily 20to 2. The forward line had most of the play during the game with Muz top scoring with 9 goals.

U18s

Fresh from a 2 week break the u18s played at home against melb high 1 and with a welcome return from Rowboat, we would have enough players to keep a sub on the bench, giving players at least some rest, and with OJ stepping in goals, we were able to run Flash on the wings and attack lines.

The game would prove to be surprisingly difficult , and melb high proved they had come prepared, winning the ball from face off to get a 2 goal jump on us. we quickly answered back, thanks to some great faceoff work, and offensive play from Malekai, Olay, and Red, and were able to get a 2 goal lead on them.

once again Mitchy Mitchy Mitchy and Mez were relentless in the midfield line giving plenty of support to the faceoffs, while groundballing and clearing time and time again. the defense played a sterling game yet again, with Courtnayyy and Baxter proving to be too much for the opposition playing great body position and all over them like a rash. all the while Gus-Gus was busy laying people out and letting them know who’s boss (surprisingly he wasn’t called for a 5 second late hit).

although the final score could have been a bigger margin, we were still happy to put another win under our belts, and with a comfortable 4th spot on the ladder, well have our eyes firmly set on finals.

No report

under 14 Malvern Vs Willy

Down by the bay wind blowing saw Malvern leading 9-2 at half time. Big improvement from the offence saw Joe Blakeney tally up with a 4-2 day joined together with Michael Alaimo fellow left hand netted 2-2. The X man Michael Petritsch worked hard for his 3-2. Again the little dynamo Toby Exton powered through the face offs to goal 9 times and 2 assists. Outstanding defence work from Max Dalglesh has firmed up the defence along with Edward Brennan our full time goalie. A very solid effort today final score Malvern 24 Willy 2

Dave Joy

U12s Black

After a tight first quarter, the black team started to play a lot better team lacrosse, and ended up 17-6 winners against Eltham.

Regular Goalies Guy and Elliot ensured that Eltham were not going to get any easy goals, saving shots, and make good passes out to our running middy’s.

Strong defensive play from the rotating duo of Darcy, Captain for the day Nick K, Rupert and “Mr. Air Guitar” Hugo meant that any attacking eltham players were slowed down, and when a loose ball was in sight picked up and strongly run into the attack. With Hugo, Darcy and Rupert also managing to snare a goal.

While Jordy, Alex and Nick C moved the ball swiftly in attack and run the lines well, ensuring that the Eltham goalie was always under the pump, and all managed to snare some good goals, and equally good assists.

A great showing on sportsmanship was displayed by Ben Chapman, who let a young first year Eltham player pick up the ball, even though he could have quiet easily scooped it up and ran away. And with help from other Malvern players, went on to score a goal… Great Work

James Garrett

Under 12B

The Under 12 Reds narrowly lost to Surrey Park in a tight contest.

Our defence was good all day, ably lead by Katie, Dylan, Nick and Aaron who each played a quarter in goals. In the last quarter we kept Surrey scoreless despite many forays forward. Unfortunately we weren’t able to score ourselves in the last quarter and we went down by one goal in a nail-biting finish.

Tom had a particularly good game with four assists.

Well played.
